Helmet Credited With Saving Lake Powell Mountain Climber's Life

A COLORADO MAN, 30, REMAINED IN AN ARIZONA HOSPITAL MONDAY -- BUT WAS EXPECTED TO RECOVER -- AFTER HE WAS HIT IN THE HEAD, BY A FALLING ROCK, WHILE CLIMBING AT LAKE POWELL.

KANE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICALS SAY, THE VICTIM WAS CLIMBING A BUTTE, WHEN HE SLIPPED -- TO THE END OF HIS ROPE -- AFTER A ROCK ANCHOR GAVE WAY.

POLICE SAY HE WAS HANGING -- BY HIS HARNESS -- WHEN THE SANDSTONE, LOOSENED BY THE ANCHOR, FELL FROM ABOVE.

THE CLIMBER'S FRIENDS CALLED 9-1-1, FROM A BOAT BELOW.

THE MAN WAS HELICOPTERED OUT OF THE AREA, TO A FLAGSTAFF HOSPITAL.

OFFICIALS SAY HIS HELMET LIKELY SAVED HIS LIFE... GIVEN THE SIZE OF THE ROCK THAT STRUCK HIM.
