Kennecott Landslide So Massive, It Caused Sixteen Earthquakes

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SCIENTISTS SAY THAT MASSIVE ROCKSLIDE -- AT THE BINGHAM COPPER MINE, LAST YEAR -- WAS THE LARGEST, NON-VOLCANIC SLIDE IN NORTH AMERICAN HISTORY.

SCIENTISTS CLAIM THE APRIL TENTH SLIDE -- AT THE OPEN ORE PIT, SOUTHWEST OF SALT LAKE -- TRIGGERED 16 SMALL EARTHQUAKES...AND LOOSENED ENOUGH MATERIAL TO COVER NEW YORK'S CENTRAL PARK, WITH 66 FEET OF DIRT AND ROCKS.

RESEARCHERS SAY THE ROCK AVALANCHES ALSO REACHED SPEEDS OF 100 MILES PER HOUR.

THE MINE IS OWNED BY KENNECOTT UTAH COPPER.

NO ONE WAS HURT IN THE LANDSLIDE.. BUT IT DESTROYED 14 TRUCKS, AND LED TO WIDESPREAD COMPANY LAYOFFS.
