Salt Lake Police are Calling a Downtown Store Clerk a 'Hero'

A QUICK-ACTING SALT LAKE STORE MANAGER THWARTED AN ARMED ROBBERY, THURSDAY MORNING.

POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE 'BIG LOT' STORE -- NEAR 4TH EAST, ON 2ND SOUTH -- AFTER A 59-YEAR-OLD HOMELESS MAN PULLED A LARGE KITCHEN KNIFE FROM A STORE SHELF... TOOK IT OUT OF ITS PACKAGING... AND THREATENED A CLERK WITH IT, DEMANDING CASH.

SARGEANT ROBIN HEIDEN SAYS, THE STORE MANAGER WAS NEARBY... AND SPRANG INTO ACTION, WHEN THE SUSPECT BRIEFLY SET THE KNIFE ON THE COUNTER.

NO ONE WAS HURT.

THE SUSPECT IS NOW BEING BOOKED INTO THE SALT LAKE COUNTY JAIL.
