Score a Direct Hit for Old Man Winter

FREEZING RAIN AND HEAVY SNOW CAUSED ALL KINDS OF WASATCH FRONT PROBLEMS THURSDAY -- FROM POWER POLE FIRES, TO THE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF SALT LAKE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

MORE THAN 3000 POWER CUSTOMERS LOST ELECTRICAL SERVICES, PRIMARILY IN WEST VALLEY CITY, TAYLORSVILLE AND HIGHLAND.

THE FAA ORDERED THE AIRPORT CLOSED -- ABOUT 9:30 THURSDAY MORNING -- AFTER A CARGO PLANE SLIPPED.  THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE. 

THE FREEZING RAIN ALSO ALLOWED ELECTRICITY TO ARC ATOP SEVERAL UTILITY POLES.  AT LEAST 13 POLE FIRES WERE ALSO REPORTED.
